Many years ago,
a friend gave me a book called
THE DANCE by Oriah Mountain Dreamer.
I know…it sounds pretty out there,
but stay with me.
I’ll never forget the quote on the cover:
***
“What if the question is not
why am I so infrequently
the person I really want to be,
but why do I so infrequently
want to be the person I really am?”
***
There’s a variety of ways to apply this…
Here’s one.
We often spend a lot of time
worrying about where we fall short—
what skills we lack, what traits we’re missing…
but when it comes to your natural gifts,
why not double down on those?
For my own part,
I’m doubling down on performance
AND strategic consulting.
I know. It doesn’t sound like a pair,
but it’s where I excel.
What hurts me and holds me back are
the times when I worry that it
SHOULDN’T be that way,
or when I look at myself
from everyone else’s perspective.
“Wait—are you a performing artist or
do you help leaders and organizations
with their performance?”
The answer: BOTH.
That’s my edge:
providing shrewd insights to a CEO on Tues.,
meeting with the leadership team on Wed.,
rehearsing in the studio Thurs.,
and bringing it all together for a keynote next week.
It’s this combination that is my DANCE.
What is yours?
Risk Forward & Rock On,
P.S. If you’re looking for guidance, a good place to start is with The 4 Questions outlined in RISK FORWARD. If you don’t know what those are (i.e. you don’t yet have a copy of my book) what the heck are you waiting for? 🙂
