“Are they castable?’”
The president of a large company
shared this question with me.
He wasn’t talking
about a film or a play;
he was talking about his company
when it came to deciding
who to cut and who to keep.
I’d never quite heard this concept
with regard to employees vs. actors.
And I haven’t seen it anywhere
else on the net…until this post.
“What do you mean by castable?”
I asked. In essence,
he meant the ability
for someone to work well
with different people
on different projects.
His particular company
had just gone through
a major reduction in workforce,
a process many organizations
are managing and grappling with this year.
I’d asked him how they decided
who to keep and who to let go.
No doubt, while there were many factors
that went into the decision-making process,
his question, “Are they castable?”
struck me.
As workforces shift with the arrival of AI,
and as competition and market disruption
continue to accelerate,
it remains ever-more critical
to do one’s particular job well,
hitting whatever KPIs and metrics are set forth.
But beyond this, “castability”
is an important factor to consider.
How can you improve your ability
to be agile and adaptable—
to work on a range of projects
and with a range of personalities?
