Leading Change In An Industry: What Could You Do?

Last week, we attended the premiere

of the documentary film

“Tune Out the Noise.”

It’s a story of how a few key individuals

challenged traditional methods of investing,

and how their discoveries ultimately

led to the invention of index funds…

and changed Wall Street forever.

Regardless of your field,

when you notice an old approach is broken;

when you see a set of “data”

indicating another reality is at play,

it’s worth challenging the norm.

Whether it’s in your personal life

or in your business sector,

here are 5 obvious but important steps:

  1. Recognize the truth of what you’re seeing
  2. Ask if there might be another, better way (also check out last week’s related post on “Strawberry” which I recorded just before this film screening)
  3. Brainstorm options with qualified individuals who are open to reinvention
  4. Proceed strategically & find a few key early adopters/supporters
  5. Demonstrate proven improvements/results

The key words in #3 above are:

“qualified” and “open to reinvention.”

You want people who understand the field

and you want people

who aren’t threatened by change.

No doubt, you will meet

with resistance from those who are in power.

Most people dislike change anyway,

but many key players will

have a vested interest

in keeping the status quo as it is.

Risking forward & breaking new ground

requires courage, conviction, tenacity

…and strategic communication.

With these,

you can revolutionize an industry

and improve people’s lives for the better.

P.S. I felt incredibly fortunate to watch the film alongside 3 trailblazers: Frank Oz, Diane Sawyer, and Senator Bill Bradley.

P.P.S. If you’re interested in finance, investing, and disruption/reinvention in general, you can watch the entire doc film on YouTube for free.
