“That’s a very good question.”
Twice in 30 minutes,
I heard this from the CEO
of a multinational technology company.
He and I met this past week
via video in prep for a keynote
I’ll be delivering live to his top teams.
I’m not sharing this to toot my horn,
but to make an important point:
the quality of your questions
indicates the quality of your thinking.
It also influences the direction of the conversation.
So don’t squander the opportunity.
If you want to develop a relationship,
learn about someone (or their organization),
hold their attention AND earn their respect,
be mindful of the questions you ask.
They should be unexpected and insightful.
They should NOT be cliche nor address
anything that can easily be found on the net.
Do your homework.
Come prepared.
In 2018, when we launched Muppet Guys Talking,
a documentary I conceived and co-produced,
we did a few screenings
and dozens of press interviews.
Some reporters asked dead end questions such as,
“Who is your favorite character?”
Other reporters were brilliant,
posing superb questions that sparked
illuminating dialogue.
Whatever your field or role,
if you want to differentiate yourself
and fast-forward the dynamic,
asking excellent questions will go a long way.
They are “arrows in your quiver”
and if you can prep 5-7 options
that will apply to a range of situations,
you’ll be well positioned no matter what.
Place yourself in an elite percentile.
Hit the bullseye.
Gain insights others never will.
And earn the respect you deserve.
